Introduction โœจ๐ŸŽค

As a new corporate trainer or someone looking to get into the field, you might be wondering how to make your training sessions more engaging and memorable. One of the most effective ways to do this is by incorporating your passions into your training session. I was recently reminded of this while chatting with some fellow learning professionals on the A Better Way of Life podcast. ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ To watch the full episode, ๐Ÿ‘‰ click here.

Whether you have a love for magic ๐ŸŽฉ, music ๐ŸŽต, sports ๐Ÿ€, or storytelling ๐Ÿ“–, bringing personal interests into the classroom can make your sessions more dynamic, relatable, and impactful. Sharing your passions provides a glimpse into your personality, which fosters authenticity in your presentation and allows you to connect with participants on a deeper level. Incorporating your passions into your training also helps keep the content fresh and stimulating for you to deliver. So letโ€™s jump in! ๐Ÿš€

In this post, weโ€™ll explore why integrating your passions can enhance learning, practical ways to do it, and how to strike the right balance between engagement and professionalism.

Why Incorporating Your Passions Works ๐ŸŽฏ

People learn best when training is relevant to them and immediately applicable, but letโ€™s not forget that they also need to be engaged. When trainers bring enthusiasm, passion, and personal experiences into their sessions, learners naturally respond with increased interest and participation.

Here are some key benefits:

1. Increased Engagement ๐ŸŽ‰ โ€“ Passion is contagious. If youโ€™re excited about what youโ€™re teaching, your learners will be too.

2. Memorability ๐Ÿง  โ€“ Learners retain information better when itโ€™s tied to a unique experience, such as a story or demonstration related to your interests.

3. Authenticity ๐Ÿค โ€“ Sharing what excites you helps build rapport with your audience and makes the learning experience more personal.

4. Improved Understanding ๐Ÿ’ก โ€“ Analogies and real-world examples drawn from hobbies can clarify complex concepts in ways that standard instruction may not.

A Real-World Example ๐Ÿ”ฎ

In a previous role, I used to deliver training on an email marketing tool frequently. ๐Ÿ“ง An email marketing tool helps you send, track, and automate emails to reach your audience with features like customizable templates, automation, and analytics, among other things.

At the beginning of the training, I would have participants write down their favorite superhero ๐Ÿฆธโ€โ™‚๏ธ on a slip of paper and throw it into a hat ๐ŸŽฉ. Then, I would have one of the participants pick one of the slips of paper from the hat and read it aloud. Finally, the big reveal! ๐ŸŽญ

I would have them log into their computers to find an email campaign that I had scheduled to run before they even entered the classroom. The email would perfectly match the favorite superhero that had been randomly selected. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

I used that as a transition into showing them how I set up that email campaign and continued the training from there.

That way of opening the training session immediately captured attention ๐ŸŽฏ, and every group I did it for consistently met their learning objectives. It drove instant engagement, and it was remarkable how many participants remembered the experience. It was authentic to a true passion of mineโ€”magic ๐ŸŽฉโœจโ€”and it improved the classโ€™s understanding.

As an added kicker, it was always fun and exciting for me to deliver that session! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐ŸŽ‰

Practical Ways to Bring Your Passion into Training ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ“š

1. Identify Your Passions ๐ŸŽฏ

It may sound silly because you obviously know what you are passionate about. The key is to think about which of your passions might be easiest to relate to your content and easiest to understand for your participants.

The first key, finding the easiest passions to relate to your content, is twofold. The first thing to consider is context ๐Ÿงฉ. Can clear lines be drawn from your passion to the content you are covering? In most cases, you will be able to draw some lines, but the clearer, the betterโ€”especially when you are first starting out.

Secondly, consider how you plan to approach step two below, โ€œreflect on connections.โ€ Some of your passions may not lend themselves to either approach well, so you may want to go down a different avenue.

When identifying your passions, the other key is to consider what will be the easiest for your participants to understand ๐Ÿค”. If you are passionate about hockey ๐Ÿ’ and training in Asia ๐ŸŒ, your passion wonโ€™t likely be relatable at all to that audience without a lot of upfront explanation. So, stick with topics that are widely relatable when possible.

2. Reflect on Connections ๐Ÿ”—

This is the practice of connecting the dots from your experiences engaging in what you are passionate about with the content that you deliver in the classroom. It can take form in a couple of different ways.

One way is to have the content in the back of your mind while you are participating in your passions and make a mental note about a connection you envision ๐Ÿ’ก. After you finish listening to your podcast ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ or playing your game ๐ŸŽฎ, take a moment to write yourself a note ๐Ÿ“ that you can expand on later.

The other approach is to purposely set aside time shortly after engaging in your passion to document your ideas. Either wayโ€”or a combination of the twoโ€”may work best for you. So try different approaches and remember that one may work better for some of your passions than others.

3. Document and Scrutinize ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ”

The biggest mistake you can make is to โ€œwing it.โ€ Taking time to write down your idea and flush it out is vitally important ๐Ÿšจ. If you donโ€™t, youโ€™re running a huge risk of rambling a story or analogy that makes no sense, wastes time, and ultimately has to be abandoned because all itโ€™s doing is causing more confusion for your participants ๐Ÿ˜ตโ€๐Ÿ’ซ.

It honestly only takes ten to twenty minutes โณ to document. You can start with just some bullets ๐Ÿ“Œ that outline your talking points and get as deep as a full script ๐Ÿ“– if that is helpful. Typically, I would recommend something in betweenโ€”where you document anything you may find tricky a little more thoroughly and areas you find easy a little less.

4. Practice ๐ŸŽญ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

Another key to successfully leveraging your passions is to practice delivering your outline or script. These stories, analogies, or other forms of engagement should be quick-hitting anecdotes anyway, so it will only take a few minutes โฑ๏ธ.

You can:

โ€ข Record yourself ๐ŸŽฅ and watch or listen back.

โ€ข Practice in front of a mirror ๐Ÿชž.

โ€ข Run it past a colleague, friend, or family member ๐Ÿ‘ฅ.

They can help you ensure that what you have prepared makes sense and allow you to work out any potential issues before you deliver it to a live group.

5. Delivery ๐Ÿš€

All the heavy lifting is done! Now, you just need to deliver the new addition to your training! ๐ŸŽ‰

The first few times, you would be wise to keep track of how it lands and ask yourself a few questions:

1. Does it have the intended impact of increasing understanding? ๐Ÿค”

2. Is it taking too much time? โณ

3. Is it driving the engagement that you were hoping for? ๐Ÿ™Œ

If the answer to any of these questions is no, itโ€™s time to tweak it for future sessions. If the answer to all of these questions is yes, you have a winner! ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŽฏ

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them ๐Ÿšง๐ŸŽฏ

While integrating personal interests into training can be highly effective, there are some potential challenges to be aware of:

  1. Staying Professional and On-Topic ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ“š

Itโ€™s easy to get carried away when discussing a personal passion. Here are some things to keep in mind to avoid this:

  • โœ… Ensure your stories and demonstrations directly support the training objectives.
  • โณ Keep examples brief and relevant to the lesson.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Use transitions that clearly connect your interest to the learning point. Here is some more information about transitions if you need it! ๐Ÿ‘‰ Trainer Transitions
  • ๐Ÿ“Š Keep roughly 90-95% of the session based strictly on the content. You donโ€™t need a fifteen-minute story that drives home a single point in a one-hour session.
  1. Catering to a Diverse Audience ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‘ฅ

Not everyone in your audience will share your interests or views. Keep things appropriate for all learners:

  • ๐ŸŒŽ Use universally relatable or geographically localized stories and analogies. If youโ€™re drawing a connection from a US-based pop culture ๐ŸŽฌ story, it may not land if youโ€™re training in India ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ, for example.
  • โ“ If time allows, ask questions that invite learners to share their own experiences.
  • ๐Ÿ† Consider offering multiple analogies to ensure inclusivity.
  • ๐Ÿšซ Stay away from politics ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ and religion โ›ช.
  1. Managing Time Effectively โณ๐Ÿ“

Interactive activities can sometimes take longer than expected. To keep your sessions on track:

  • ๐Ÿ•’ Plan with a clear time limit.
  • ๐Ÿ‘€ Monitor learner engagement and adjust accordingly.

Final Thoughts ๐Ÿ’ก

Bringing your passions into training sessions isnโ€™t just about making things fun ๐ŸŽ‰โ€”itโ€™s about making learning more effective ๐Ÿ“–. Whether you use storytelling ๐Ÿ“–, interactive demonstrations ๐ŸŽญ, or creative visuals ๐ŸŽจ, integrating your interests can help new trainers stand out and deliver more impactful sessions.

Be thoughtful that youโ€™re:

โœ”๏ธ Aligning your passions with the learning objectives.

โœ”๏ธ Gauging participant reactions ๐ŸŽญ.

โœ”๏ธ Using your passions as a quick hook ๐ŸŽฃ.

โœ”๏ธ Considering blended methods to cater to different learning styles ๐Ÿง .

If youโ€™re just starting your journey as a corporate trainer, experiment ๐Ÿงช with different approaches and see what works best for your audience. Over time, youโ€™ll develop a signature style โœจ that makes your sessions unique and highly effective ๐Ÿš€.

Until next time! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿ˜Š
